The Gladys Quine Rose - A Rose against TB - to be launched at Hatfield House 16th/17th June.

TB Alert supporters can attend the launch of this beautiful Rose, named in memory of a very special lady who died of TB.

The Gladys Quine Rose is a strong, stunning rose with a lovely scent. and a slightly changing colour.  It starts off deep apricot in bud, turns paler in bloom and then pink before going over. The Gladys Quine Rose blooms throughout the summer with each flower lasting really well.

The Gladys Quine Rose will be launched at Hatfield House on 16th/17th June 2007, at a special Rose weekend. All are welcome for this spectacular gardening event. To find out more click here

Why is the Rose called Gladys Quine?

TB Alert supporter Francesca Quine was looking for a way to commemorate the life of her grandmother who had died of TB before Francesca was born. As Gladys had loved roses felt that this would be a wonderful way to keep her memory alive. You can see a picture of Gladys top right underneath her rose.

A note from Hector - Francesca's father:
"Gladys was born Gladys Foster, in Lancashire on 29th April 1889 and died in London on 22nd December 1934 of pulmonary tuberculosis.   She married my father in 1918, a marine engineer who had served throughout the First World War in convoys bringing food and armaments from America.   He was torpedoed twice by German submarines and survived because he was a strong swimmer and was able to keep afloat until picked up by Royal Navy ships.   He died in 1948 of a heart attack.  They had three sons: Rodney, Alan, and myself,  Hector.  We lived in London and, with our father at sea for most of the year, Gladys looked after us, mostly without help though she had a 'companion' who assisted with household chores.   She died when I was just 8 years old. I think its wonderful that with this rose her memory will live on and give many people lots of pleasure."
