We need people – people like those in TB Alert, who are focused and ambitious and care for people at grass roots in the UK, India and Africa. Dr Lucica Ditiu, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership
TB Alert is the UK's national tuberculosis charity
We are the only charity that focuses on TB both in the UK and overseas. We have projects on the ground in India, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. This gives us a unique perspective in order to address issues around TB that are common both to low incidence countries like the UK and high incidence regions such as Africa and Asia. We also advocate for the policies and resources to be put in place to fight TB as a global issue.
Our vision is the control and ultimate elimination of TB
Our mission is to increase access to effective treatment for all
TB Alert believes that no one should die from TB – an illness that kills 1.3 million people around the world each year, even though TB is curable. A world without TB is possible. When people can quickly and easily access the life-saving treatment already available; when services exist that are responsive to the needs of affected communities; when more effective tools and drugs for preventing, diagnosing and treating TB are made available – then we will be on track to realise our vision. This is why we focus our work in three key areas:
- raising public and professional awareness about TB, and providing support to patients during their treatment
- bringing together statutory health services, voluntary organisations and people affected by TB to plan and deliver better TB services
- developing policy and advocating for the resources to improve the care of patients and the prevention and control of TB.
