Existing Services in the Area
Government provided health care: The only government run health facility is a maternity health care centre in Burari Village for mothers and children.
There are also a number of government Polio health workers providing polio drops to children. Furthermore there are 48 Anganwadi workers (local primary health workers), who teach young children ways to look after their health. During the situation analysis we have identified and contacted these workers in order to work with them in our new project, either as DOT providers or to help spread awareness.
Private Health Providers (PHP’s): We have identified and contacted 22 Private health providers within the area running local clinics or chemists, these will be the people we initially approach to be trained to be DOT providers within the area as they will already be recognised and trusted within the community.
Schools: There are three government run primary schools and one government run secondary school covering the entire local population. Plus, for those who can afford it, 5 Private schools. Young children also receive a basic education from the Anganwadi workers. The local counsellor reports that the current school facilities are not sufficient to meet the needs of the growing population of the area and that there are children who are unable to attend school.
It is within these schools that we can focus work on fighting Paediatric TB by running awareness events and possibly doing screening to identify TB cases.
The RB-TB Hospital and Kingsway Chest Clinic: This is the largest TB Hospital in India is situated 15km from Burari. Dr Banavaliker, chair of TB Alert India has been superintendent at the Hospital since 2005 and is able to provide the project with support from the hospital and the State TB officer. While the clinic is too far away for Tuberculosis patients to travel on a regular basis from Burari, the Hospital is a useful facility for us in more complicated TB cases which we do not have the facilities to deal with.
