Tuberculosis in the Area
The DOTS implementation programme in the district is under the direct control and supervision of the Chest Clinic, Kingsway Camp (KCC) attached to the Rajan Babu TB Hospital. The KCC recorded a total of 2000 new cases within the district in 2007, 20% of which were paediatric-TB.
Burari alone had 400 of the 2000 new cases. In the past these TB patients would have to travel the 15Km to the chest clinic in order to be diagnosed and follow up the DOTS regime, this distance would mean commuting costs of 30 Rs per visit and require them to come regularly, such a distance meant default cases where high.
While contacting private health providers in the area it became clear that TB is clearly a serious problem. One PHP in Nethupara, DR Gorvimd Malik reported that he knew of four deaths due to Tuberculosis in the last 3 months.
