Tsunami News
Krishna project headquarters is located inland and was not affected by the Tsunami on Boxing Day last year. But the tidal wave hit Manginipudi beach, about 10km away, where many local people were observing holy rituals related to the Hindu calendar. Also hit by the 600 km/hr wave were Machilipatnam, Bantumilli, Krutivennu, Laxmipuram and Koduru, along the coastal belt of Krishna district. (see map below)
As the news struck the television sets, the TB Alert/Lepra Krischip project staff reacted immediately and offered their help in the clear-up efforts and providing first aid, medicines and mineral water to the people affected.
Mr. R.D. Chittibabu, Project Supervisor in Machilipatnam Zone took part in the relief work carried out at the Manginipudi beach. The first and most difficult task was clearing bodies from the area, but Mr Chittibabu said that the community spirit even in such terrible circumstances was quite uplifting.
None of the staff at TB Alert’s project were injured in the disaster, but we send our heartfelt condolences to those who lost friends or relatives, and wish the people of the area all the best in the long task of rebuilding and recovery.
