Examples of Grants Given

Patient A received a grant of £48 to fund a nomad system (a box system with medication dispensed into a dated and timed compartment by the pharmacy). This enabled the patient, who was profoundly deaf, to self-medicate without the need for directly observed therapy.

Family B was granted £180 to cover travel: the mother and infant were hospitalised with TB at different hospitals and another child was visiting as an outpatient. Travel was granted at £30 per month for the family over a six month period until treatment was completed.

Patient C, a recent arrival into the UK from Africa, received £33.90 to funds a four month prescription prepayment certificate as she was on a low income and unable to afford to pay for her medication.

Nurse D was granted £26.99 to fund a map of London postcode areas for the office, as over 100 patients in the previous year had lived outside their primary care trust area. The map assisted the team in tracking cases.

Patient E had been in the UK for eighteen months and was undergoing a long course of TB treatment. The patient had encountered many problems on arrival to the UK, economic, social, physical and pyschological. When the patient was first seen by the TB nurse, she was in considerable distress and suffering. Nevertheless the patient faced all her problems head on and, with some support, came through and was coping well with every day living and has attended the local college to improve her language skills.  Patient E was granted £90 to study a counselling course to enable them to help others, particularly TB patients, who were experiencing similar problems.
