Our work

We are the only specialist tuberculosis charity in the UK, with over 20 years’ technical, programmatic and advocacy experience.

Our workforce and board bring a strong clinical understanding of TB with a deep recognition of its social dimensions. Our work with governments, donor agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has assisted diverse communities across many geographic settings.

What we do

Alongside our sister organization, TB Alert India, we offer a range of programmatic, advisory, technical and training services and are also prominent in international advocacy initiatives.

These are built on our experience in the UK and in high TB incidence settings in India, Africa, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The mental effects of TB still affect me today.

Sumanjha and Rupesh:

When Sumanjha and Rupesh arrived at the clinic they were in crisis.

The counseling they received helped them both through Rupesh’s battle with multi-drug-resistant TB but it did more than this. Sumanjha was inspired to train as a TB support worker herself.

Global advocacy

We are dedicated to global TB advocacy, working to influence policy and decision makers in the UK and internationally to combat tuberculosis (TB).

Our advocacy and our field programmes are two sides of the same coin. While our fieldwork directly assists individuals and communities in overcoming barriers to TB diagnosis and care, our advocacy ensures the necessary policies and resources are in place to achieve the same goals on a wider scale.

We strive to prevent TB, provide comprehensive care for everyone affected by it, and control the spread of the infection.

Whenever I needed support during my treatment, Sumanjha was there to help me, and I am very proud she is now working with TB Alert India to help other people suffering from TB.

Three pillars of advocacy

Patient-centred TB services
We work to make TB services accessible to everyone who needs them.

Partnering with civil society, healthcare providers, and governments, we push for better resources and drive investment in new vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments.

Our partners include the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Global TB, the Stop TB Partnership, and the TB Europe Coalition.

Strengthening local advocacy
In our field programmes, we partner with local NGOs that work daily with people at risk of TB.

These organisations are best positioned to help local communities because they understand the socio-economic and cultural barriers to testing, diagnosis, and treatment.

We build the capacity of these local partners to advocate with governments at local and national levels for the health rights of people at risk of TB.

Empowering communities and affected individuals
We believe that those with personal experience of TB are the most powerful advocates for change.

We support the development of patient-based associations – both in the UK and in our overseas programmes – to amplify their voices.

I say, ‘Look at me, I live with HIV and I have had TB too’, but I have not let it hold me back.

Amy: from patient to parliament:

Feeling isolated and frustrated after a diagnosis of TB, Amy contacted TB Alert and found a peer supporter through their TB Action community.

She soon felt “less alone” and had “hope for the future”. Now, Amy chairs the group to help others avoid the same experience as her. As part of the community’s TB advocacy work, she has spoken in the European and UK parliaments.

Technical support

We support organisations that work with communities affected by TB – especially organisations addressing TB-related health conditions such as HIV – to integrate TB into their strategies and build organisational TB capacity.

We work with community representatives, government stakeholders, and healthcare providers to develop sustainable, customised interventions and programme proposals.

TB Alert provides technical advisory, training and monitoring support to enable organisations to deliver high standard programmes while at the same time developing their staff capabilities.

We have extensive experience in programme delivery, tackling TB on the ground across the UK and in high TB incidence countries in South Asia and Southern Africa. This broad reach gives us a unique perspective on TB as a global issue.

Our work focuses on raising awareness of TB, among both the communities at highest risk of developing the illness and the organisations that work with them. We also help people to access life-saving treatment and support them during this difficult time.

Case finding and patient support:

We identify new TB cases and provide essential support to patients throughout their treatment journey.

Community health groups:

We establish and support community-based health groups to engage local populations and facilitate access to care.

Professional training and resources:

We develop professional educational materials for healthcare providers to improve the quality of TB services.

Awareness raising:

We focus on raising awareness among communities at the highest risk of TB, as well as the organisations that serve them, ensuring people can access life-saving treatment and support.

TB Alert has been our technical adviser on the ‘TB in the Mining Sector in Southern Africa’ programme.

Their training has been invaluable in ensuring that field staff across eight countries could achieve the goals of the programme to quality and on a timely basis.

The TB Alert team also developed our organisational TB capacity, developed our monitoring and evaluation system and undertook in-depth monitoring visits.
