BCG stocks prioritised during delivery delay

Priority for Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) immunisation is to be given to children considered to be most at risk of tuberculosis, after Public Health England (PHE) announced delays in the supply line. New stocks of the vaccine are expected to be received at the end of May.

BCG is a key part of the neonatal vaccination programme, and is recommended for:

  • All infants (aged 0–12 months) living in areas of the UK where annual incidence of TB is 40/100,000 or greater
  • All infants (aged 0–12 months) with one or more parent or grandparent who was born in a country where the annual incidence of TB is 40/100,000 or greater

BCG is also offered to previously unvaccinated children who may have been exposed to infectious TB, and individuals at occupational risk.
