Economist report calls for greater action against TB

A new report highlights the need to overcome the apathy surrounding TB in order to make real headway in tackling the illness.

‘Ancient enemy, modern imperative: A time for greater action against tuberculosis’ was recently launched in London by The Economist Intelligence Unit, and supported by pharmaceutical company Janssen, which developed the TB drug Bedaquiline.

The report examines the health challenges posed by TB and calls for a more integrated approach to TB, finding and treating people where they live, utilising cost-effective technology and raising the profile of the illness.

Dr Lucica Ditiu, executive secretary, STOP TB Partnership, explains in the report that TB has been met with apathy; “It is like an orphan. It has been neglected even in countries with a high burden and often forgotten by donors and those investing in health interventions.”
