As the Millennium Development Goals draw to a close, the United Nations is defining the post-2015 development agenda with new targets for 2030 – including eliminating TB.
In the 15 years that followed the launch of the MDGs, there have been muted successes in addressing TB:
- TB incidence fell in all regions, by an average of 1.5 per cent per year – meeting the MDG target of halting the spread and reversing the incidence of TB by 2015.
- TB mortality fell by 45 per cent between 1990 and 2013 – on track to reach the global Stop TB Partnership target of a 50 per cent reduction by 2015 compared with 1990.
Progress has been slow and more needs to be done. This is why TB Alert welcomes the draft of the post-2015 agenda, which will be launched in September 2015, that sets out the 2030 ambition to:
“…end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.”
