Old Disease – New Threat

Old Disease – New Threat is a report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global TB (APPG) that sets out recommendations for steps the UK government should take to address drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) in the UK and globally. The APPG received oral and written evidence from key TB stakeholders – including the Health Protection Agency, Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria and TB Alert – examining the current and future challenges posed by growing rates of DR-TB.

Recommendations:

A national strategy for tuberculosis in the UK: Public Health England to lead a comprehensive TB strategy, bringing together the NICE guidelines for the management and treatment of DR-TB; guidance on recommended patient to nurse rations; appropriate training for specialist nurses; coordinated screening for latent TB infection; a targeted approach to increasing GP registrations; and broader awareness raising involving the third sector.

Increased funding to strengthen the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria: The UK government should lead the internationally community by doubling its funding for the Global Fund from £128 million per year to £256 million.
