Celebrating innovation in TB nursing

TB Alert is pleased to announce the launch of the first award of its kind to recognise the crucial role that TB Nurses provide in the UK towards TB care and control: The Sir John Crofton Prize for TB Nursing, sponsored by Oxford Immunotec.

TB nurses are at the fTB nurse and patientorefront of patient care in the UK. Daily they face numerous challenges working with people with complex social problems including homelessness, drug and alcohol issues or the challenges of navigating health services in a new country.

Through the prize, TB Alert will help raise the profile of TB Nursing on the national stage; influence policy and secure the resources for effective TB care and control; and allow TB Nurses to inspire and inform colleagues across the sector.

The Sir John Crofton Prize for TB Nursing is now open for entries that showcase innovation and excellence in TB nursing. This may be: nursing that has helped turn patients’ lives around, perhaps helping them find housing or overcome addiction; the use of peer support to improve treatment completion; work to overcome barriers in the patient pathway; nursing that addresses the practical issues faced by patients living with tuberculosis; and joining up with the third sector to increase awareness of among at risk groups.

Our day to day work goes beyond simple clinical provision. We need to support people – many of whom who have complex needs – to get to their appointments, eat decent food and live in conditions that aid their recovery. TB Alert’s work with agencies that provide services for communities affected by TB – migrant communities, homeless people, substance misusers – helps take some of the pressure off of TB Nurses.” TB Nurse

The winning entry will receive £500, and the runner-up £250, to use towards continuing professional development. Costs will be covered for up to two people from the winning team to attend the award ceremony at the Royal Society of Medicine’s TB conference on 18 March 2015.
